Pakistan’s Internet bandwidth goes up by 40 Tbps

Pakistan got a new submarine cable connection with a capacity of 40 Terabits per second across five fiber pairs as AAE-1 (Asia-Africa-Europe-1).

Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) is a 25,000km consortium cable system connecting South East Asia to Europe via Egypt, the largest submarine cable to be constructed in almost 15 years.

Countries Included in AAE-1

It connects Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, with Malaysia and Singapore, then onwards to Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, and France.

AAE-1 cable system deploys state-of-the-art 100Gbps transmission technology, with a minimum design capacity of 40 Tbps.

The new submarine cable system will reach over 25,000 km from France, Marseille to Hong Kong with 21 cable landings across Europe and Asia.

Companies Part of AAE-1

The AAE-1 consortium which took 10 years efforts to complete include PTCL, China Unicom, CIL (HyalRoute), Djibouti Telecom, Etisalat, GT5L, Mobily, Omantel, Ooredoo, OTEG, PCCW, Reliance Jio, Retelit, Telecom Egypt, TeleYemen, TOT, Viettel, VNPT and VTC.

PTCL is the company that will be managing and operating cable in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s bandwidth will immediately increase once AAE-1 is operational. AAE-1 will help Pakistan meet its bandwidth needs as the internet usage in country is on rising, AAE-1

  • Sea-Me-We-3 with 480 Gbps with two fiber pairs
  • Sea-Me-We-4 with design capacity of 1.28Tbps
  • I-ME-WE with Design Capacity of 3.86Tbps
  • AAE-1 with design capacity of 40Tbps
  • Sea-Me-We-5 with design capacity of 24Tbps
